When Word exports an extra blank PDF page, inspect and fix the DOCX first, then export a fresh PDF. Remove the page from a copied PDF only when the Word source cannot be changed, the page is confirmed unnecessary, and the new PDF passes a page-by-page check.
Identify what is creating the page in Word
A blank-looking page can be caused by a final paragraph, a manual page break, or a section break. Save a working copy of the DOCX, turn on formatting marks, and identify the cause before deleting anything that may control headers, footers, numbering, or page orientation.
Microsoft's current blank-page guidance applies to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016. It also names Mac editions for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+8 to show paragraph marks; on Mac, press Command+8. Localized ribbons may use different text, but the Home > Show/Hide control serves the same diagnostic purpose.
Look at the blank page and the end of the preceding page:
- If a manual page break appears, select that break and delete it. Microsoft distinguishes manual breaks, which can be removed, from automatic page breaks, which must be controlled through paragraph pagination settings.
- If the final, non-deletable paragraph mark has been pushed onto its own page, select that mark and set its font size to 1 point. Microsoft also suggests a smaller bottom margin if the mark still does not fit.
- If a paragraph mark has a square indicator, open its paragraph settings and check whether Page break before is enabled.
- If the page follows a Next Page, Odd Page, or Even Page section break, do not delete the break blindly. A break in the middle of a document may control different headers, footers, columns, or orientation.
For a middle section break, Microsoft's blank-page article suggests changing it to Layout > Breaks > Continuous when the document does not need a new page at that point. Check the pages on both sides afterward because changing a section break can alter layout even when the blank page disappears.
Export a new PDF and verify the Word result
After correcting the source, save the DOCX copy and export a new PDF rather than changing the only existing delivery file. Open the exported PDF, confirm its total page count, and inspect the transition where the blank page used to appear.
Microsoft's desktop PDF page currently lists Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016 in its version scope. Its Word route uses File > Save As or Save a Copy, chooses PDF, and exposes page-range controls through More Options > Options. Word 2024 is named on Microsoft's blank-page page but not on that PDF article's current Applies To line, so treat the exact export labels as interface dependent. On Word for the web, Mac, or a managed build with different menus, use the available Save As, Save a Copy, Export, or print-to-PDF route and confirm the output instead of assuming one universal ribbon path.
For example, suppose a six-page proposal becomes a seven-page PDF, with page 7 appearing empty. Showing formatting marks reveals a final paragraph after a full-page table. Reducing only that final mark to 1 point may let it fit on page 6 without changing the table. Re-export the PDF and check the last table row, footer, and page number; the disappearance of page 7 is not enough if the table or footer was clipped.
If the blank page is intentional for duplex printing, chapter parity, or a signature packet, keep it. A page with no body text may still carry a required header, footer, section boundary, or print purpose.
Rebuild a delivery PDF only as a fallback
If you cannot change the source DOCX but are authorized to prepare the final PDF, work from a copy and preserve the original PDF. Use PDF Page Manager to enter only the page numbers that should remain, then create a new output file with a distinct name.
The current tool reads the selected PDF in the browser and builds a new PDF from the order you provide. Entering 1-6 for a seven-page file omits page 7 from the new output; entering 1-3,5,4 also changes order. A rotation option can apply the selected angle to copied pages. The source file itself is not overwritten.
PDF Page Manager does not open or edit DOCX files, inspect Word formatting marks, or decide whether a blank page is accidental. It also cannot tell whether page 7 carries an invisible form field, required page size, tagged structure, or printing role. You make the page-selection decision, and the output is a newly rebuilt PDF rather than a repaired Word document.
If you need a visual contact check, PDF to Image can render selected pages as PNG or JPG. That can make an apparently blank page easier to inspect at different zoom levels, but rasterizing pages does not diagnose a Word section break and should not replace checking the PDF itself. PDF Split can create separate PDFs for ranges when the delivery requires multiple files; it is not needed merely to omit one page from a single rebuilt output.
Check for collateral changes before delivery
A correct result preserves every required page, not merely a smaller page count. Open the new PDF independently and compare it with the original PDF and the Word working copy.
Check these points before sending or uploading it:
- The first, last, and expected total page numbers match the delivery requirement.
- Headers, footers, footnotes, bookmarks, links, and signatures still appear where expected.
- Landscape pages, section-specific numbering, and duplex-printing intent remain correct.
- No nonblank page was omitted because the range was typed incorrectly.
- The filename distinguishes the reviewed output from the preserved original.
If the PDF is signed, certified, submitted through a controlled records process, or used for accessibility, do not rebuild it casually. Changing its page set can invalidate a signature, remove tags or interactive content, or break a recordkeeping rule. Return to the document owner or approved workflow when those conditions apply.
Common questions
Why does Word create a blank last page after a table?
Word keeps a final paragraph after the table, and that non-deletable paragraph can be pushed onto another page. Microsoft's documented fallback is to show paragraph marks and reduce that final mark to 1 point, then verify the layout.
Can I delete every section break that creates a blank page?
No. Section breaks may control headers, footers, numbering, columns, orientation, or odd/even page behavior. For a middle break, consider changing it to Continuous and inspect both adjacent sections.
Does ToolboxHub fix the Word document?
No. PDF Page Manager accepts a PDF and creates a new PDF from selected pages. It does not open, diagnose, edit, or save a DOCX file, so Word formatting must be corrected in Word.
Is omitting the last page during Word PDF export the same as fixing it?
No. A page-range export can produce the required delivery pages, but the DOCX still contains the condition that created the extra page. Fix the source when future edits or exports are expected.
How do I know the blank page is safe to remove?
Show formatting marks in Word, confirm the page's purpose with the document owner, and compare page count, headers, footers, numbering, and content before and after. If the document is signed or controlled, use its approved process.
