Best for
Narrow English word candidates when some crossword letters are known, or search for words beginning with, ending with or containing a fragment. It does not interpret clues, solve an entire grid or apply excluded-letter rules. Check meaning and crossing letters yourself.
How to use it
Pattern mode starts selected. Enter up to 25 characters with ? or _ for each unknown position, such as C?T, then search or press Enter. Other modes retain letters only and remove wildcards. Example buttons switch back to Pattern and run their example immediately.
How to read the result
A pattern must match the entire word at the cleaned pattern length. Prefix, suffix and contains searches do not require equal lengths. The summary counts every match, but the list shows only the first 500 in dictionary order; add known letters to narrow large results.
Privacy and limits
The browser downloads /data/enable.txt from this site, caches the successful list in page memory and performs matching locally. Your pattern is not included in that download URL. The widget has no third-party clue-solving API, account synchronization or persistent query history.
Question marks and underscores represent one position each, not variable-length text; asterisks are unsupported. Other punctuation is removed and can shorten the effective pattern. Proper names may be missing. Changing input or mode clears previous results; run another search to see updated candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use this for crosswords?
For "C_T" you know the first letter is C and last is T but middle is unknown. Enter "C?T" — get CAT, COT, CUT.
Wordle / Hangman?
Yes. If you know "??ART" pattern, enter that to find APART, START, CHART, etc.
Pattern with no length?
Length must equal the word length you want. Use "Starts with" / "Ends with" / "Contains" modes for length-flexible search.
